June 26 marked International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, to commemorate the United Nations ratification of the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 1987. Obama smashes isolationism at summit

President Barack Obama called isolationism the "wrong medicine" on Wednesday. During a summit with his Canadian and Mexican counterparts, Obama took a clear swipe at Trumpist tendencies, Brexit and the entire notion of withdrawing from the world. Read more

Brexit hatchets come out

In Britain, last-minute candidacy announcements came tumbling out ahead of a Thursday deadline to declare. Home Secretary Theresa May and Trump-lite Boris Johnson announced their intentions to replace David Cameron as prime minister. In the meanwhile, the pound continued its Brexit slide, hitting just below R20 this morning. Read more

Nigeria's former Air Force chief arrested

A former chief of the Nigerian Air Force and several other high ranking officers were arrested on corruption charges late on Wednesday. Air Marshal Adesola Amosu Nunayon, Air Vice Marshal Jacob Bola Adigun and Air Commodore Gbadebo Owodunni Olugbenga are facing 26 combined charges of embezzlement. Corruption in the new Nigerian government, it seems, simply does not fly. Read more

South African withdraws from Olympics

Lee-Anne Pace has become the first LPGA golf pro to withdraw from the Rio Olympics. Citing the concerns over the ongoing Zika virus scare, Pace has decided to withdraw. She will likely not be the last to do so. Read more
