A shift in power is now unfolding in the country with Democratic Alliance (DA) mayors being elected in former African National Congress (ANC) strongholds. The DA’s multiparty pact with other parties and the Economic Freedom Fighters’ (EFF’s) decision to vote for opposition party mayors has delivered a second deadly blow to the ANC after the local government elections thrashing. While the ANC’s national executive committee (NEC) emerged with an insipid statement about the elections outcome, behind the scenes, President Jacob Zuma showed he is unruffled by the crisis facing the party. Rio police say US swimmers made up mugging story

Star US swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his Olympic teammates were not robbed in Rio as they claimed, but tried to flee after apparently vandalising a bathroom at a gas station, police said Thursday. The plot thickens. But all swimmers appear to have flown out of Rio and back to the US. Read More

Schoeman brings in bronze

After a bit of a downer on Wednesday, Thursday more than made up for it. Henri Schoeman bagged a bronze in the triathlon, overcoming a fever that had “left him in tears”, while Sunette Viljoen won silver in the javelin and Caster Semenya breezed through to the final of the women’s 800m. Metallica fans rejoice! The metal group has announced their first new album in eight years. 'Hardwired... To Self-Destruct' will be released in November. Fans, meanwhile, will spend the coming months praying the album won't suck. Read More
